With Joint Souls

Joint Souls is a soulful band led by Markus Teuton, the sole composer and lyricist of all the songs.

Regular members list (doesn't include one-off substitutes)

Joint Souls released their first studio album, Trouble in Stride, on 2024/01/30, and it was recorded across the weekends of 2022/10/22–3, 2023/03/04–5, and 2023/10/07–8. There is an planned bandcamp release which will have more details and credits than this page, but it is also available on other digital streaming platforms:

Joint Souls also got into MoPOP's Sound Off 2024 (having also submitted for the previous year). Because of the 21-and-under age limit, half the band had to be subbed. In typical fashion, I have an unofficial audio recording, and the produced video of Hope Is In My Hand will also be linked here when it is released. Below is the personnel and the setlist:

Sound Off info

  • Markus Teuton: guitar, vocals, writer
  • Aadithya Manoj: alto sax

Setlist:

  1. Gettin Up Higher
  2. Hope Is In My Hand*
  3. Trouble In Stride

* This song is the one that will have a produced video, at the band's choice. The other two songs will not be released in any form by MoPOP.

Joint Souls Performances

We have played several live shows in an effort to spread our music and musicianship. Here is a list of performances we have done of all sizes since my induction to the band, with generally mediocre quality recordings provided where available (reverse chronological order):

West Coast Tour 2024

Before tour

On "reduced" gigs, I played bass instead of or in addition to my usual keyboard role.

In the two years leading up to the eventual album release, Joint Souls uploaded three singles. The two from 2022 were recorded early in the year, before I joined the band (I was still in Boston at the time). This version of No Player is identical to the album version, except perhaps some mastering differences. I don't play on any of these singles.

With Aryana León

Aryana León is a pop/R&B/hip hop singer. I have played behind her in a backing band for some shows:

Previous work with Markus Teuton

On Markus' single Growing Pains (2021) [S][A][Y], I contributed to two songs (Aisha On My Mind, Rise Again) by playing keyboard & electric bass, and producing/mixing them.

On Markus' single Just Don't Know (2022) [S][A][Y], I contributed to the eponymous sole song by playing keyboard & electric bass.

College ensembles

In my stint at Berklee College of Music, I was enrolled in two ensemble classes (both were the general "Small Band Jazz" ensemble, rating 4). In each ensemble, there was an encouragement or soft requirement to bring in music (basic lead sheets, personal arrangements, originals, etc.), for the purpose of playing a mandatory recital at the end of the term. I chose to arrange a composition each for both ensembles; these both were played at the aforementioned recital which was recorded and has been uploaded to my YouTube channel.

Here are details on the two originals, with links to the full recitals:

  1. Cloud City:
    • Medium jazz waltz employing equal parts modal interchange and shifting key centers.
    • Originally composed January 2021
    • Ensemble/Instrumentation: trumpet, violin, 2 guitars (single part), piano, electric bass, drums
    • Ensemble led by prof. Herman Hampton, fall 2021 term. Recital happened on 8 Dec 2021, video recorded as requested by professor.
    • Trimmed video link of full recital here: https://youtu.be/8tXfeiRuaAs. A timestamp for my composition is in the video description.
  2. Blare:
    • Up-tempo jazz waltz with stream-of-consciousness harmony, accompanied by a refrain borrowed from a moment of La Cathédrale Engloutie.
    • Originally composed February 2020
    • Ensemble/Instrumentation: trumpet, 2 tenor saxophones, piano, bass, drums
    • Ensemble led by prof. Mimi Jones, spring 2022 term. Recital happened on 16 Apr 2022, audio recorded by me.
    • Audio-only video link of full recital here: https://youtu.be/nicr8GBLPcM. A timestamp for my composition is in the video description.
